What should you do if a fire breaks out in an electrical panel room?
An electrical panel room fire can occur due to short circuits, overloaded circuits, loose connections, insulation failure, or overheating electrical components. If a fire breaks out, raise the alarm immediately, warn nearby personnel, and evacuate the affected area using a safe exit. Do not touch the electrical panel or attempt to disconnect the power if doing so would expose you to danger. Only authorized and qualified personnel should isolate the electrical supply when it is safe to do so. Contact the emergency response team or fire department and keep untrained personnel away from the area.
Never use water or ordinary foam extinguishers on energized electrical equipment. A suitable CO₂ or non-conductive dry chemical powder extinguisher may be used only by a trained person if the fire is small, the equipment is appropriate, and a safe escape route is available. Electrical panel rooms should have suitable fire detection and protection systems, restricted access, proper ventilation, and regular inspections. Preventive maintenance, electrical safety practices, and a clear emergency response plan are essential for reducing the risk of electrical fires and protecting lives.
